Using Zen to create your first custom theme

This is another session providing a step-by-step procedure to help beginners begin to get a grasp on Drupal's theme architecture.

Some of the things we will look at:

  • Installing the Zen theme
  • Setting up your Zen sub theme
  • Making your new theme actually "look" like something by modifying your CSS files
  • Using theme-settings.php to define settings for your theme
  • Using template.php to make your settings available as variables
  • Modifying the page.tpl.php file to create a different overall layout

Depending on the amount of time allowed for each session, the overall skill level of attendees of this session (yes, this IS designed for beginners -- not to worry), and the number of questions during the session we will have a pretty/ugly/pretty ugly looking site by the end of the session.

Note: I will have prepared the graphics for the theme ahead of time. This session will not cover using image manipulation software and the creation of the graphics for the theme.
